50 gamechangers: Tengami

Format: iPad, PC, Mac
Developer: Nyamyam
Premiere: 2012

The dedicated fan-driven Rare-sites finally has something to write about again. Tengami – developed by previously Rare-employed – is a beautiful puzzle adventure that’s debuting on iPad (other versions to be released later) this year. It looks like something out of Japanese fairy tale and Nyamyam heartily spends lots of time underlining the origami-effect that brings the images to life on the retina screen.

While beautiful and esthetically pleasing both visually and aurally, the game does seem to have an issue with pacing. If the critics over on metacritic.com, whom average the game at 70, seem to agree on something, it’s that it is very noticeable and at some points overcome how pretty the game is. But depending on how you embrace the game, as a puzzler or an artistic, interactive painting, you’ll enjoy it on different levels. And while the pop-up book effect may be prominent on a touch device such as the iPad we’ll have to wait and see how it translates to the PC and Mac
