50 gamechangers: Code Hero

Scan of Code Hero from LeveL #76

Code Hero

Format: PC
Developer: Primer Labs
Premiere: 31 August (beta)

Yet another first-person-shooter? Yes, but hardly what you think. In Code Hero you fire javascript. You don’t tap code, you shoot it – and can that way create your own game inside the game. Primer Labs-ideologist Alex Peak argues that javascript is the most important language in todays digital world – and that Code Hero is more fun than traditional educational means. We can only agree.

It’s been a long time since Code Hero should have been available to its backers. It’s been a long time since Code Hero should have been available as an educational tool. A successful Kickstarter that passed the initial goal by 70% should have meant a project that was funded at least 150%. But Code Hero isn’t available yet. But it’s finally getting there. The whole things serves more as a cautionary tale about Kickstarter and crowd-funding, Jessica Conditt has chronicled much of happened over on Joystiq.

Today the updates are more frequent and on key, but they’re confined to the Kickstarter page, leaving the official site with a date of August 2013.
