50 gamechangers: Cloudberrry Kingdom

Scan of Cloudberry Kingdom from LeveL #76

Cloudberry Kingdom

Format: Multi
Developer: Pwnee Studios
Premiere: 2012

If you think that Cloudberry Kingdom is too easy, you’re not good enough. It may look cute but Pwnees pitch is built on it being the most difficult platformer ever. To ensure this they’ve constructed a level design with artificial intelligence. The better you play, the more difficult it gets. Upper limit? There is none.

To spend about $10 and gain access to endless levels and difficulty sounds like a great deal, as long as you remember that you’re getting a platformer and nothing else. The algorithm works and will throw procedurally generated levels at you as long as you can clear them, and the AI can always show you how it’s done if things get too tricky. But the critics over at metacritic.com seem to agree that it’s a great platform game, but that no matter how you spin it it’s still a platformer and nothing more. For people that thrive on such things, this is perfect, but for others it may get tedious. Either way it’s worth putting into you library, since it does offer endless play and difficulty.
