Slip ups

So have I really not played anything but indie games for 500 days?

People that take the time to examine my profile on Steam may find that I’ve logged quite a few hours into Dragon Age. Doesn’t look good, does it? But the thing is that I haven’t played Dragon Age even once. I do however have a significant other that’s a very avid DA-player and has gone around the story quite a few times.

But there are other, actual slip ups as well. The earliest was when we were at a party at a friend and he had a shiny MAME machine, a stand-up arcade cabinet. I was a bit tipsy and managed to get one match of Street Fighter III in before someone asked “Hey, is that indie?”. I left the cabinet and in a alcohol-driven fit of just for laughs I spent about ten minutes trying to find a way to angle it so that it would qualify as indie. It didn’t work out, but I never expected it to.

The next one was not really playing a game as much as checking out the hardware. A friend had gotten a Nintendo 2Ds and since I saw the first pictures of the thing I had been very skeptical. So when I got the chance I wanted to have a feel when we went on a trip together. The latest Zelda game was running and I tried the joystick and buttons and just tried out the hardware and controls without actually playing the game. But it’s still worth noting.

The final slip up actually affect the parameters of the project. When I started out I stated that all new non-indie releases during the experiment were supposed to be virtually non-existent by stating that I wouldn’t be able to play them until two years after their release date. This mindset, this psychological firewall, has been present throughout the entire experiment, I have treated all the game as titles I will never get to play. But I haven’t blocked out any news sources or marketing, so I’ve still gotten updated and looked at reviews for everything. And I never really had any trouble with yearning for a game. If anything this limitation has helped me. I’m a big Sim City fan, but I’m glad I didn’t get stuck with all the issues of the new Sim City game. An usually I would get a new Playstation on release, but I’ve learned that I don’t really need a console, I’m much happier with my PC.
However, since about a month ago I’ve started to question why I would continue to limit my library when there’s no real reason to. Since I accepted the two-year rule fully until just recently I think I’ve gotten what I can from that part of the experiment. And even if I wan’t allowed to play the games they still existed, since I didn’t cut off any information sources, so the initial idea may not have worked out as initially intended anyway. I’ll tell you more about that later. But what I’ve decided is to not keep the two-year rule after the experiment is over. But I’m not going to pursue to just binge all the games I’ve missed, as my interest in new titles has almost disappeared entirely. It’s much easier to not jump on the new game when you’ve been hindered to do so for over a year.
