ALS #IceBucketChallenge

The #IceBucketChallenge is an online campaign to raise awareness and funds for ALS research. It started out by challenging people to either donate $100 or pour a bucket of ice-water over their heads, then nominate 3 other people that are supposed to reply to the same conditions within 24h. It became viral pretty fast and we soon saw a lot of people posting videos, and many people, mostly celebrities, would both donate and take the cold shower. There are also some controversies about where the money is actually going when donating via alsa.org, but that’s a different issue and there are other instances you can contribute to, like ullacarinstiftelse.se here in Sweden. But what I saw was a lot of people missing the point and just pouring a bucket of ice water over their head as a fun viral video game, and the information that was supposed to get out there was never mentioned. That’s why I made this video.

What I stress in the video is that the information has to get out there and that donations are made. What I find less important is actually pouring the bucket.

And like with most things I do there’s a meta game to it, which is why I’m following the trail to see if the replies degrade from my initial video. Kind of like the whispering game, except that everyone can see and hear where things differ. So this post will be updated along the way with replies to my initial challenge and the viral factor, and also scrutinized for what they contain.

As you can see it only took three steps before all the information was lost and we were just back to pouring water and calling out people. Not to mention all the unanswered challenges.

A special notice is to be made of @arnroth as he has acknowledged the challenge and claims the controversy over where the alsa.org money is going as a reason for not doing the challenge, instead of just donating to ullacarinstiftelse.se instead. Bad form, sir.

I’ll continue updating this post if other replies are contributed.

Happy gaming!
